FAQ

Q: What's hypnosis really?
A: There isn't a definition of hypnosis that's completely satisfactory, but there are a few partly satisfactory definitions. Hypnosis is a natural state, perhaps *the* natural state of awareness. It occurs when the conscious levels of mind are partly by-passed, leaving the autonomic levels of the mind more receptive to suggestion.

Q: What about NLP?
A: The situation with NLP is even worse, sometimes it seems that NLP can mean whatever you want it to mean, so we have to go back to basics. An early definition; "the study of the structure of subjective experience and what can be calculated from that" (Bandler and Grinder) is helpful but not very - it's all a bit impenetrable really. In reality, NLP is the study of how we learn and can modify our responses to events. The associations between stimulus and our responses (that's 'behaviour' to you and me) can be changed, and this is what makes NLP such a powerful tool in therapy, which was its original purpose. Before it got all trendy that is.

Q: Therapy or counselling?
A: We think they're not the same thing. To us, counselling is pretty much just advice really. Good advice is always useful of course, but if you want change then what you really need is therapy - which is different. Therapy may include some counselling but they're not the same thing.

Q: How long is the training?
A: We do our training one full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) per month for 7 months. We work from 9.00am through to 5.00pm with an hour for lunch, so it's tough and there's a lot to cover. You'd expect us to be thorough, so naturally we include all of the psychology and counselling background you need to get good. Really good. At the end of the day though, you decide just how good.

Q: What's all this about happiness?
A: Good question - actually, it's a very good question. Everyone should think happiness is a birthright. If you haven't got enough then you should be doing something about it. That's where we can help. Happiness is worth working at, but it begins with emotional freedom, and that's the tricky bit.
