It's a funny old world sometimes... there's a story of a US Navy submarine which had developed a hydraulic fault somewhere deep in the pipes of its system. The shipyard engineers assiduously searched for the problem but could not find it, so naturally, the solution also eluded them. In desperation, the Admiral authorised a specialist from the design engineers to call by and see what he could find. He called by the next day and went from bow to stern, examining all the hydraulic systems in the submarine.
After much sucking of teeth and scratching of head, the old man thoughtfully went to a partly concealed service cupboard nobody had known about. He carefully looked at all the pipes, then took a hammer from his pocket and fetched one pipe an almighty blow. The problem was fixed and the submarine sailed out the next day. Three weeks later, the Admiral received an invoice for $10,000 for fixing the problem. He wrote to the design engineers, complaining that the specialist had only actually hit one pipe with a hammer, and that he, the Admiral thought $10,000 was too steep a price to pay for such a small amount of work.
The next day he received an amended invoice which read: Charge for banging a pipe: 50c. Charge for knowing where to bang: $9,999.50. The Admiral paid the invoice without further comment.
